Father’s Day Sonora Smart DoddFather’s Day  – Sonora Smart Dodd

The introduction of a Father’s Day followed the already well established Mother’s Day. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd, a young woman from Spokane, Washington, came up with the concept of Father’s Day. Her idea stemmed from her father’s hard work bringing up his six children as a single parent. In recognition of her father’s commitment to her family, Sonora felt it was only fair for there to be a day dedicated to fathers too.

Setting the date

After gaining support from the Spokane YMCA and the Spokane Ministerial Alliance, Sonora suggested that Father’s Day be on 5th June, her father’s birthday. Unfortunately for Sonora, the Ministerial Alliance felt they needed more time to prepare sermons and so they chose 19th June instead. Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time in Spokane on 19th June 1910 and so it followed that Father’s Day would be celebrated on the third Sunday in June every year. After 1910, the celebrations soon spread across the country as state after state begin celebrating Father’s Day too.

Sonora was keen to promote the day nationally, and she enlisted the help of companies who would benefit from the celebration. Cue the birth of the Father’s Day Industry… Ties, socks, tobacco – Sonora took advantage of companies that sold traditional gifts for fathers and they helped her further promote the celebration.
